My “local mom”, Golda Elliott passed away a few days ago. Here is her obituary.
Golda Elliott passed away unexpectedly at the Foothills Hospital with her husband Henry and family and friends by her side on Monday evening April 21, 2008.
A woman of boundless energy she will be remembered for her grace and humour, her perpetual smile, her desire to make the world a more beautiful place, and her unfailing strength of character. She was a true friend to all. Although Golda had no biological children, she was a devoted grandmother and to a lucky few she was “local mom”.
Golda was born in Moncton NB, November 21st 1949, and upon graduating from Oulton's College she moved to Calgary in 1970. Golda began her career in the steno pool of a Mannix corporation but left as the VP Finance, moving on to work in venture capital and becoming the marketing director for the Banff School of Advanced Management. Her love of the arts culminated when she became chairman of the board for the Alberta Ballet where she worked tirelessly, and as was her nature, loved every minute of it.
Golda's passion for reading lead her to form a book club with tastes that ran from politics and passion to biographies and art. With her husband, Golda explored her talent for design, they renovated and redressed houses with an uncommon flair, turning unrealized potential into functional beauty.
For Golda nothing was ever done in half measures and she kept her personal motto stuck to the fridge, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.”
Golda will be missed by all, her immediate family, her extended family, numerous friends and all the countless lives that she touched along the way.
Golda's funeral will be at Fosters Garden Chapel, 3220 4th ST NW at 11:00am on Friday, April 25. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alberta Ballet would be appreciated.
